Product Review: Koolatron KWC-4 Coca-Cola Personal 6-Can Mini Fridge
Price Range: $25 -- $50
Who Would Buy This: Those shopping for a super portable, cheap mini fridge that can keep up to to 6 cans of beverages cool.
Size and Style
The Koolatron KWC-4 boasts a compact, lightweight design. It measures just 11″ x 8″ x 11″, so it can slot just about anywhere you want it, whether it be an office desk, bedside table or even in the car. When turned on, it disperses air out of back and side vents, so you do need to give it a few inches of clearance to accommodate this.
The unit is made entirely from plastic, but it’s still pretty durable, apart from the latch which is rather flimsy so should be handled with care when opening and closing the door. The door is fitted with a recessed handle that you can open simply by turning it. It’s self-locking design means the door locks automatically when you close it.
In addition to it’s compact size, it’s styling is super cute. It’s colorful red exterior goes beautifully with the legendary white Coca Cola trademark and white bear.
Versatile Power Options
This cooler can run on 12v DC or 110v AC power sources, so it’s ideal for usage where there is no mains power conveniently available.
What power cords you receive in the box seem to depend on the exact model you receive. Some consumers have received both a 12v DC and 110v power cord, whereas others received just a 110v AC cord.
The interior of this little cooler has a 4 litre capacity, giving you just enough space to store six regular 12oz cans of Coca Cola (or your preferred can of beverage).
It’s storage layout is fairly standard as far as mini fridges go. It comes with one small removable plastic shelf. At the bottom, four cans can be stored upright. At the top section, two cans need to be stored on their side horizontally.
Thermo Electric Cooling
The Koolatron makes use of Thermo Electric cooling, using an internal fan to create coolness which is produced on a thin metallic surface inside. It’s rated to cool about 32 °F below the ambient room temperature.
The fan runs continuously 24/7 so it doesn’t utilize stop/start technology, much to our dismay, but it’s energy consumption is only 50 watts, so it is very energy efficient. The noise level it produces is similar to that of a desktop computer, so if you want it to run silently you will need to replace the stock fan with another one. This is easy enough to do and only costs about 5 to 10 bucks and a bit of DIY.
Guarantee: 1-year warranty.
This is a cheap and cheerful mini fridge that is perfect for cooling your cans on the go. It doesn’t have the cooling power of a proper compressor type refrigerator so you won’t get ice cold beverages, but it’s fine for keeping already cold items cool, so it meets it’s intended purpose well. The addition of a warming feature is also useful, so you can use it to keep food warm when it gets to the colder time of year.
For any Coca Cola collector, this is a must have.
